As of 2004, every new
boiler manufactured is a condensing boiler. What does this mean? Steam that would otherwise be wasted is condensed,
allowing it to be reused and the cycle continues. This reduces wasted energy and allows the boiler to work much more efficiently.
Generally speaking, there are three main types of boiler; combi, conventional and system; all of which have their pros and cons...
Conventional boiler
Conventional
boilers are great for homes with older radiator systems that would not be able
to cope with the high water pressures that come with combi or system boilers.
They can also keep with high demands for hot water, making them suitable for
homes with two or more bathrooms, or for a large family.
Conventional boilers require two water tanks and a water storage cylinder, so are only suitable for
homes with lots of loft/storage sapce. As well as this, when your water cylinder
empties, you have to wait for it to refill and heat up before you get any more
hot water. Water cylinders are not always very economical, as heat can escape
while in storage.
System boiler
System boilers
are a comprise between combi and conventional, as they require a storage
cylinder but no water tanks. This means they are suitable for a wider rang of
homes, as they do not take up any loft space. The cylinder is usually located
in an upstairs cupboard but can fit wherever you have extra space. They are
great for large families or several bathrooms and can meet a high demand for
hot water.
System boilers
have similar negative points as a conventional boiler, regarding the storage
cylinder.
Combination boiler
Combi boilers
are gaining popularity in the UK, as they require the least amount of space and
are great for smaller homes. They do not need any tanks or cylinders and work
directly from the mains. They instantly produce hot water as and when you need
it, making them very economical. As they don’t have a storage cylinder, they
waste very little heat- saving you money.
The main
downside to combi boilers is that they struggle to meet high demand for hot water.
They are best suited for smaller homes with single bathrooms.
